Owned both right now , Golf Mk8 and ford focus 20 plate and tbh focus is rubbish, the interior quality is like I’m driving 2010 car and also not reliable at all. On the other hand Mk8 golf quality and interior is just amazing no comparison! Also no resale value of ford focus no one wants to buy it . Oh I forgot the wet timing belt in ford 🤣

I will never buy a Chinese car - and my reasoning is political. Will support a regime like the Chinese one as little as possible - and that is almost impossible. But no reason to buy an entire car manufactured in unfair competition with state aid and suppression of the free speech and other rights we have in Europe.

The Chinese Peoples Party subsidise the MG and other Chinese vehicles, which is not permitted in Europe due to competition regulation. Both Europe and the USA are about to ramp up Import Duty on Chinese vehicles, then they won't be so competitive. Whilst one might think this is a disadvantage to the consumer, it does protect thousands of jobs in Europe. European countries are not permitted to subsidise the price of cars, so why should China be permitted to. VW use recycled materials and its factory and supply chain are nett zero. I wish you car journos would take into account the carbon footprint of cars. Apart from the good work that VW has invested in, just look at the distance the MG has had to travel. I would not buy a Chinese car for this reason and I much prefer the look of the ID.3 so I bought one.

9:57 Tesla Supercharger network is seriously underrated Rented an iX from Sixt in the UK as it was brand new (delivery mileage) and offered to me as an upgrade to the Model Y. I happen to have both cars at home. I already know both cars well. The iX is more comfortable but a lot more expensive but here is the kicker, charging for a non-UK resident in a non-Tesla in nearly a nightmare. Tried two AC chargers, both did not want to play. Swarco being the worst, with multiple IDs on one machine, none of which worked when you enter it onto their website with other EV drivers struggling also (We were at Westgate, Oxford). Finally DC charged at a GridServe which thankfully accepted contactless charging without registering in an app but at a princely £0.79 per kW at a crawling 60kWh. I am not renting another non-Tesla in the UK until all CPO comply with the "no app, contactless" directive

The cars follow different strategies, the ID priorities on the battery to have changeable modules, that's put weight and lessen the range. But it's definitely more reliable and sustainable. Anything wrong with the MG4 battery will cause the replacement of the whole damn battery. I have had an MG4 Trophy for 10 months, great value car ( especially on 0% interest PCP which I have), if they could just sort out the Lane Keep Assist ( which is a bit too enthusiastic-I generally switch it off). If they could bring out a 400 mile range model it would be a world beater!

The Focus blows the Golf out of the water, in fact, every ocean in the world. Then again the Golf is intended for the more business minded driver, if you want an amazing sporty looking car with great handling, it's the Focus anyday for me. I used to have a 2015 Seat Leon (basically a mk7 Golf) and I just picked up a 2019 Focus ST-Line hatch last week.

SIAC make all the VW group cars for the Chinese market. Hence many of the parts used in all MG cars are from the VW parts bin. The MG5 is largly VW in all its parts MG dealers sell MG5 parts to VW owners. So many parts are identical in quality.

China and the Germany economy wins every time. Way smarter than the French/British Vauxhall.

good review / comparison. either i wait for the skoda epiq or for the next version of the ID.3, which might be a Golf 9. for all these comparisons a deeper dive in the battery system might be helpful. it is important to know if the battery is module based, if it shares the same modules with other cars, what the cost for a single module is and what is the total repair cost if one module needs to be changed. this is something that drives me to VW. you can buy a single module online for only 2150€. but i don't know how much repair cost of the battery would be. VW only uses just a few variants and in 10 years from now there are plenty of 2nd hand modules available for a low price ( i guess easy under 1000€, maybe only 500€). that modularity gives me the necessary safety net of low battery repair costs. for people who give back the car after 3 or 4 years of leasing this is not relevant at all. but i am more oriented to second hand cars or keep it very long - beyond the warranty.

So many times I have to repeat this to people complaining about the climate control. You can use the voice commands to do it, no need to prod anything. In fact the voice control can do a lot in the car, it's perfectly capable in the C5 Aircross.

If obsessed with 0-60 time there is one clear winner. I am more interested in how the car drives and how it feels. The i5 continues the trend that has been true for many years, the bmw 5 is the drivers car in that segment (be it fossil fuel, hybrid or electric). It can now do many if the tricks the Tesla can, BMW customer service is much better, the interior feels more special, is better built etc etc. Yes, the tesla is much quicker in a straight line, but how often will you use that speed?
